Blue skies, scorching sun and the unmistakable roar of jet engines over the Laage airbase near Rostock: The German Armed Forces Day became an absolute spectacle here last weekend.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the Air Force, the base opened its gates and revealed its full fascination – from historical icons of post-war aviation to state-of-the-art operational jets and the technologies of tomorrow.

MiG-29, Eurofighter, Tornado
What took everyone's breath away that day: Two examples of the extremely rare "Cobra" MiG-29 – known for their spectacular maneuverability – stood side by side with a swarm of Eurofighters on the apron.
Tornado jets completed the trio that made aviation enthusiasts' hearts beat faster. Three generations of combat aviation in one image – Laage delivered exactly what airshows are made for.

However, the emotional highlight of the day was a very special guest with a very special story: One of the decommissioned MiG-29s symbolically returned to its former base – Laage, where the aircraft have been flying long since reunification.
As a tangible historical artifact, it represents that brief period of détente in which East and West drew closer together, before new geopolitical tensions arose. The fact that this jet is now being presented to the public carries a quiet but powerful message.

As if that weren't enough, guests from the neighboring country completed the picture: Another MiG-29, actively in service, from the "41st Squadron of Tactical Air Wing, 22nd Battalion of Tactical Air Wing from Malbork" was on site.
Including two pilots who, despite language barriers, impressed with their openness and warmth. A strong sign of NATO solidarity through direct, personal interaction.
Who knew about this?
The day finally offered what political debates rarely provide: genuine, tangible security. Anyone who heard the Eurofighters thundering low overhead and experienced the pilots' precision up close needed no further explanation of Germany's growing defense capabilities. Visually and audibly, it was an absolute sensory overload.
This leaves one legitimate question unanswered: Why wasn't this event specifically promoted in densely populated industrial centers like the Ruhr area?
Laage will become a center of excellence
A well-thought-out PR and public awareness campaign could have instilled a sense of security and strength precisely where it was most needed. Discussions about the meaning and necessity of defense would have become completely unnecessary.
Beyond the spectacular air show, there is reason to celebrate: Laage Air Base is to be expanded into a showcase "Air Force Competence and Logistics Center".
