I had a Polo for four years GTI (2021) leased. Why I believe this was the last original – with unedited everyday photos.

Sometimes you only realize how special something truly was when you say goodbye. Four years and around 50.000 kilometers, and I can say without exaggeration: this Polo GTI was one of the best cars I've ever driven daily.

Not objectively on paper, but subjectively where it counts: in the gut, in the head, in the right foot, when getting in, when rolling and in everyday life.

Small cars? Forget it.

The Polo was never the rebel in the VW lineup. It was the sensible, the reliable one. The one you bought when you didn't want to go wrong.

And then suddenly there it was: the Polo GTI, with 207 hp, DSG transmission, and a 2,0-liter engine that actually seemed far too big for such a compact car. And that was precisely where the magic lay.

Even after just a few hours in the car, it becomes clear: this is not a sporty little car. This is a seriously fast car in a body that's roughly the size of a former Golf.

Playfully easy, yes!

The Polo GTI feels light, agile, and almost playful. It reacts instantly, has incredibly precise throttle response, and when you floor it, it feels like it's about to fly forward.

0 to 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds sounds underwhelming, but feels significantly faster because you sit so low and so close to the action.

It's a real powerhouse, especially on country roads. Turn in, switch to Sport mode, accelerate, DSG engages, and shifts into the next gear – bam, you're effortlessly moving forward. There's no sluggishness, no hesitation, and no tugging.

Highway: unexpectedly grown up

The little car feels incredibly planted with its standard suspension, remains neutral, and does exactly what I tell it to. Nothing more, nothing less. It's a car that drives with me, not against me.

What many underestimate: The Polo GTI can handle the Autobahn. And it really can. It remains composed at 180 km/h, stays relaxed at 200 km/h, and even beyond that speed, nothing feels strained. Officially, it has a top speed of 242 km/h, but according to the speedometer, it even reached 260 km/h.

And you can tell that this isn't just wishful thinking. The engine pulls cleanly, the DSG shifts seamlessly, and you're traveling very fast without it feeling dramatic.

Two faces, one character

In Sport mode, the Polo is alert, direct, and almost cheeky. Quick bursts of acceleration? No problem. Overtaking? A quick thought, then it just happens.

In Eco mode, however, the small, unassuming beast transforms into a surprisingly efficient low-flyer. Fuel consumption of under five liters is realistic if you drive it that way – and that's with 207 turbocharged horsepower.

I loved this range. He could do everything, but never tried to impress me in any way.

Inside: GTI DNA, nothing else.

Inside, it's exactly how I like it: pure, functional, and GTI-style. The original GTI seats with their classic pattern, the grippy GTI steering wheel without a ton of buttons, and a seating position that suits everyone immediately.

There's no touchscreen overload and no menu odyssey. Yes, VW wanted to sell on-demand features here too.

But honestly: just plug in Android Auto or Apple CarPlay – that's it. Nobody needs the navigation system that you have to pay extra for. I have everything I need on my smartphone anyway.

Beeping, education and drama

What I appreciate most today, I almost took for granted back then: The Polo GTI leaves me alone.

No ISANo constant beeping! No patronizing! No interference with the steering! No monitoring! He trusts me, and I trust him. And as a driver, you repay that trust.

Four years, two inspections (one minor, one major), no defects, and zero additional costs. Except for self-selected ones. All season tires, so that the annoying wheel change is no longer necessary.

It was so unspectacular that it was almost spectacular. The Polo GTI was a company car, a touring car, a sensible choice, and an emotionally engaging fun machine all at once – and it handled it all without complaint.

The last original

Yes, it has an OPF (Otto Particulate Filter), which means it's quiet. That means zero noise and zero roar. But that light, pleasant rumble, especially in Sport mode, is just enough to let you know that something small but serious is working hard up front.

Even the Hamburg police's special unit for car enthusiasts left me alone because of it. And if more people had known how good this Polo GTI really is, it would have consistently been number one in the sales charts.

Fast, efficient, honest, calm and with GTI emotions – and free from all the ballast that is now part of the standard equipment.

I truly believe this was the last genuine and honest GTI in a subcompact format. Simply a fantastic and uncomplicated car… Thank you for four years to the last original!
