More comfort even on short journeys: Lufthansa is now equipping 38 aircraft of the A320 family with a completely renewed cabin.

This also includes ergonomic seats, 40 percent larger luggage compartments, and charging options at every seat.

Retrofit starts with D-AIZY

Since mid-February 2025, the first fully modernized aircraft, registration D-AIZY, has been back in service. This marks the start of a comprehensive refurbishment program that will affect a total of 38 aircraft of the A320 family by 2029.

Each aircraft spends around 30 days in the shipyard for the so-called retrofit, where approximately 1.000 different components from around 100 suppliers are installed.

Seats from the Italian manufacturer

The modernization focuses on the new seats from the Italian manufacturer Geven. They are ergonomically designed and offer noticeably more comfort than the previous models thanks to horizontally adjustable headrests.

In Business Class, the seatback can be reclined even further. The design is based on the new long-haul aircraft and aims to create a consistent brand image across all cabin classes.

More space in the luggage compartment

A common criticism on short-haul flights is limited storage space – Lufthansa addresses this with significantly enlarged overhead bins.

The new overhead compartments offer 40 percent more volume because suitcases can now be stored vertically. This not only shortens the search for an available compartment but should also speed up the overall boarding process.

USB-A, USB-C and mounting bracket

Each seat will be equipped with both a USB-A and a USB-C port. In addition, there will be an integrated holder for tablets and smartphones that positions the device at eye level.

Anyone who wants to stream series or movies on the flight no longer needs to hold their device in their hand.

Investment in the largest fleet

Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter emphasizes that the A320 family represents the airline's largest fleet – and that is precisely why the focus of the cabin modernization is on this aircraft type.

The goal: a premium experience that is no longer limited to long-distance travel, but is also noticeable on journeys from Hamburg to Munich or Frankfurt to Vienna.
