Getting a tan quickly and maintaining the radiant summer glow for as long as possible is high on the summer to-do list.

For many people, a tanned complexion is the best souvenir from their vacation. A desirable goal: a summer glow forever from head to toe!

How quickly you tan is determined by the skin's pigment cells. As soon as these come into contact with UV radiation, the melanocytes produce the pigment melanin, which gives the sun tan its brownish color. The more pigment cells there are, the darker the skin becomes.

Generally, darker skin types have more melanocytes than lighter skin types. But you can give your summer glow a boost and both accelerate and preserve your summer tan. Please never forget: Long sunbathing sessions are unfortunately unhealthy, damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.

However, regular, moderate sunbathing is important because it is the only way the skin can produce vital vitamin D. But the sun's UV-A and UV-B rays destroy the collagen in deeper tissue layers - cell damage and wrinkles are inevitable.

So suntan is never really healthy, even if you talk about “healthy tan“ In fact, the darkening of the skin is its own protective mechanism.

A gentle peeling before tanning creates an even base, as it removes dead skin cells and allows the “fresh” skin cells to take on color.

Get a tan quickly without sun

Self-tanners actually conjure up an irresistible tan in no time. The dihydroxyacetone they contain reacts with the upper layer of skin and makes it darker. There are now various types of self-tanners: cream, spray or mousse, which you gently massage into the skin with a glove.

Depending on the product, the tanning effect occurs after one to eight hours and then lasts for about a week. Special self tan drops can be mixed into your daily cream - and the dosage can be adjusted individually. Unlike a natural tan, however, an artificial tan does not provide the skin with its own UV protection.

Applying sunscreen in the sun is still a must! Depending on the self-tanner, there is also the risk of a patchy result. Nothing is as perfect as a real sun glow! Another option for an express tan, at least for the face, is tinted day cream.

It works similarly to a foundation and gives the skin a delicate, natural tan that disappears when you remove your make-up. Like normal facial care, it is applied under make-up. Although this fake tan is also suitable for the rest of the body, the contents of a tube are limited.

accelerate the tanning process

In the long term, you can change your daily diet to make your skin color faster in the sun: beta-carotene is the magic word!

The yellow-red dye is found in abundance in fruits and vegetables such as carrots, peppers, sweet potatoes, spinach, lamb's lettuce, fennel, apricots, strawberries, oranges, melons and mangoes, and is also available in concentrated form as carotene tablets.

Beta-carotene is converted by the body into vitamin A, which provides important nutrients to help the skin tan faster and protect against burns. Body serums with carrot oil promote a long-lasting tan while on vacation - massage in a few drops every day.

Products for the sunscreen High sun protection factors guarantee a softer tan that lasts longer, as they don't dry out the skin as quickly. Please play it safe! With SPF 30 or 50, you can enjoy your tan longer.

Anti-aging products with fruit acids or retinol are best avoided if you want to protect your tan, as their effect is based on removing dead skin cells more quickly and producing fresh skin - the tan disappears more quickly. The same applies to mechanical peelings: the small abrasive particles rub away the long-awaited summer tan.

If you are not careful and unfortunately get sunburned, aloe vera provides cooling and relief and promotes rapid regeneration of the burned skin. Aloe vera, actually a desert lily, has been used as a "first aid plant" for centuries. The plant's pulp is rich in life-promoting substances.

Using the latest technology, approximately 400 active ingredients with healing effects on the human organism have been identified in the sap of the plant. In particular, the active ingredients of the pure gel inside the plant leaf are a soothing Experience for the skin.

get a summer tan

A quickly fading summer tan is frustrating after a vacation. Long-lasting tans can be preserved. The pigment melanin, which is responsible for the skin tanning in the sun, is only present in the top layers of skin. These peel off over time.

After the tan party on the beach, the tanning work is not yet done: by pampering the skin - especially after sunbathing - with moisturizing lotion or body oil, you delay the goodbye effect of the golden glow. So use lots of cream and moisturizer to rehydrate! Moisturizing cosmetics mixed with self-tanner will continue to tan.

Active ingredients such as urea, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil and shea butter moisturize particularly well, while aloe vera and dexpanthenol also soothe the skin. After-sun products should not only be used immediately after sunbathing, but also for weeks afterwards. They are ideal for caring for sun-tanned or - in the case of sunburn - sun-damaged skin.

Anything that irritates the top layer of skin will also damage your summer tan. This includes chlorinated water in the pool, salty sea water, alcohol-based deodorant, facial toner or perfume. So always take a quick shower after swimming, use mild products to cleanse your skin and use perfume sparingly!

Wet, wet, wet for perfect tan

Drinking lots of water is the best way to moisturize your skin. Tea is also popular: Green tea, for example, contains antioxidants that protect the skin - and therefore also your tan. Hot showers or baths dry out the skin. It's better to avoid bath time altogether, and the time spent in the shower shouldn't be too frequent, too long or too hot, because you can shower away a tan.

Lowering the temperature and reducing contact with water will help keep your tan for longer. You should also use moisturizing oils and mild, pH-neutral products when showering. Soaps and shower gels with a skin-neutral pH of 5,5 support the skin's protective acid mantle, slowing down the shedding of the upper layer of skin.

Moisturizing shower oils or baths prevent too much water from penetrating between the skin cells and causing them to peel off. Afterwards: pat dry rather than rub! Special moisturizing masks hydrate the complexion intensively. Waxing and sugaring not only remove hairs, but also the top layer of skin.

Therefore, after your vacation, you should switch to other hair removal methods such as depilatory creams or epilation to continue to look like you've just come from the beach. With the right care, the super glow you get from the sun won't disappear as quickly as summer.

The choice of make-up colors also supports the lasting beach babe effect: gold, olive green, intense yellow, neon yellow, dark beige and pink make the skin appear warmer and more tanned than it actually is.

White and silver also create an optical tanned effect on the skin. Summer glow from head to toe…
