Smooth skin, full lips and a flawless complexion Face – in the feeds of TikTok and Instagram, perfection seems to have long since become the norm.
Millions of users therefore constantly follow viral beauty trends that promise simple solutions and quick results.
But behind the flawless aesthetics, a major crisis of confidence is growing, which is now alarming even experts and specialists.
The dark side of TikTok aesthetics
Whether it's "Lip Flip", "Fox Eyes" or "Glass Skin": Many TikTok trends rely on minimally invasive procedures or novel skincare routines, which are often explained by influencers without a medical background.
What seems easy, inexpensive, and "trendy" can in reality have serious consequences. Professional associations are increasingly reporting faulty treatments, infections, or unnatural results – especially after procedures performed by insufficiently qualified providers.
“Social media has radically accelerated beauty ideals,” says a Hamburg dermatologist who is confronted daily with complications from failed treatments.
Crisis of confidence due to unclear origin
She says: "Many people underestimate the fact that aesthetic procedures are medical treatments and not lifestyle products." Another problem: The origin of many treatment substances often remains opaque.

Preparations without official approval are circulating online. Clinics and medical practices report patients being lured by cheap offers from social media – usually without sufficient information about ingredients, risks, or aftercare.
Added to this is the pressure to always be "camera ready". Filters, retouching and beauty effects are increasingly distorting self-image, especially among young people.
Why education is becoming more important now
Psychologists are already speaking of a digital beauty craze that undermines confidence in one's own appearance. And professional associations are calling for stricter regulations and more digital education.
At the same time, users are increasingly demanding honest insights – away from artificial perfection and towards real skin, real bodies and transparent information.
Anyone interested in treatment should check the doctor's qualifications, read real-life testimonials, and seek comprehensive advice. Beauty trends come and go – but your own well-being remains…
