After weeks of grey skies and drizzle, the Winter Currently, northern Germany is firmly in its grip.

There is often a continuous blanket of snow – for many a welcome change from the dreary winter weather of the past few weeks.

But what can you actually do during this sudden onset of winter, and what should you avoid?

Winter fun for the whole family

The sudden snowfall offers numerous opportunities to fully enjoy the winter wonderland. Families with children, in particular, will find plenty to enjoy. Classic winter activities like sledding and snowball fights bring joy to children's eyes and remain among the most popular.

If you don't have a sled handy, you can improvise using a sturdy garbage bag or an old tray – fun is guaranteed. Creative minds can try building snowmen, snow animals, or even small igloos. There are no limits to your imagination.

Food coloring can be used to add colorful accents, and twigs, stones, and carrots can be transformed into unique works of art. Some neighborhoods even use the occasion for joint competitions to see who can build the most beautiful snowman in the street.

Nature experience in a white setting

Long walks through snow-covered forests and parks have a unique magic. The subdued atmosphere, the gentle crunch of snow underfoot, and the unusual silence transform even familiar routes into a completely new experience.

Especially in the mornings, when the snow is still untouched and the first rays of sunlight make the crystals sparkle, nature reveals its most beautiful side. This offers photographers a wealth of interesting subjects. Familiar landscapes suddenly appear in a completely new light. Trees covered in snow, icy puddles, and hoarfrost on grasses provide countless opportunities for atmospheric photographs.

The blue hour in the evening lends the snowy landscape a very special atmosphere. Those who want to observe animals now have a good chance. Tracks of deer, foxes, hares, and birds are particularly easy to spot in the snow. A small field guide or a suitable app will help in identifying the different tracks.

Sporting activities in the snow

For active people, the arrival of winter offers numerous opportunities for exercise. Cross-country skiing is also possible in northern Germany, provided there is sufficient snow. Several parks and wooded areas are well-suited for first attempts on narrow skis. Those without their own equipment can inquire at sports shops or clubs about rental options.

Winter hikes have a very special charm. The exertion of trudging through the snow keeps you warm, and the fresh air is invigorating. It's important not to overestimate your abilities – every step in the snow is more strenuous than usual. A thermos of hot tea or cocoa makes a break along the way a real treat.

Cyclists don't necessarily have to give up their hobby in the snow. However, they should only ride on well-cleared paths and significantly reduce their speed. Particularly wide tires with good tread offer more grip. In any case, safety always comes before speed.

These dangers should be taken seriously.

Despite the joy of snow, caution is advised. Frozen lakes, ponds, and rivers may look inviting, but venturing onto them is life-threatening. The ice is often not thick enough to support weight, especially with such a sudden onset of winter. Even if the surface appears solid, weak spots may exist underneath. Falling through the ice frequently proves fatal, as the extreme cold can render one incapacitated within minutes.

Increased vigilance is also required on roads and sidewalks. Driving should only be undertaken with appropriate caution and winter tires. Especially in northern Germany, where snowfall is less frequent, many drivers are unaccustomed to these conditions. Braking distances increase considerably, and sudden steering movements can lead to skidding. Those who can should leave their cars at home or at least allow extra time.

Pedestrians need appropriate footwear. Slippery soles on icy sidewalks can quickly lead to painful falls. Older people are particularly at risk. Falls on ice can result in complicated fractures. Shoes with treaded soles or special shoe spikes from a hardware store offer significantly more safety.

Important information for homeowners

Homeowners should keep an eye on their roofs, but under no circumstances should they go onto them themselves. Wet snow can become quite heavy, but most roofs in northern Germany are designed to withstand such loads. Anyone who is unsure should consult a professional.

Going onto roofs without authorization is dangerous – the risk of injury from falls is enormous. The obligation to clear snow and ice from sidewalks remains in effect even in the event of sudden snowfall. Residents are generally required to ensure safe passageways from 7 a.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays.

Anyone who fails to comply with this obligation is liable in the event of accidents. In many municipalities, road salt is prohibited on public sidewalks – instead, sand, grit, or gravel should be used.

Don't forget animals and wildlife

The sudden onset of winter also poses a challenge for animals. Feeding birds is particularly important now, as they can hardly find any food under the snow.

Suet balls, sunflower seeds, and special wild bird food help our feathered friends get through the cold season. It's important to clean the feeding station regularly and protect it from moisture.

Wild animals in the forest should not be fed and should be disturbed as little as possible. Deer and other forest dwellers can cope with winter as long as they don't have to waste their energy by constantly fleeing. Dogs should therefore be kept on a leash, especially in wooded areas.

The right clothing makes all the difference.

Anyone planning to spend extended periods in the snow needs the right equipment. The layering principle has proven effective: several thin layers provide better warmth than one thick jacket.

Waterproof outer layers, breathable mid-layers, and warm underwear are essential. Gloves, a hat, and a scarf protect particularly exposed areas of the body from frostbite. Waterproof clothing is especially important for children.

Snow melts quickly when exposed to body heat, and wet clothing rapidly leads to hypothermia. Therefore, a change of clothes should always be readily available. Even adults often underestimate how quickly one can get wet in the snow.

Enjoy winter joys with common sense

The unexpected snowfall offers a wonderful opportunity to experience winter in all its facets. Whether on a relaxing walk, during active sports, or playing with the children – the white splendor transforms ordinary days into something special.

The combination of spontaneous joy and common sense ensures that these special days will be remembered fondly. Then nothing stands in the way of a perfect day in the snow.
