Christie's France has now announced that it has acquired the largest private collection of classical Louis Vuitton suitcases ever offered for auction.
The extraordinary auction, which will take place online from June 19th to July 3rd under the title "Legendary Trunks: A European Private Collection", includes over one hundred items and offers a true anthology of the famous Louis Vuitton trunks.
The pieces, collected by a passionate collector, are estimated by experts to be worth between 1,4 and 2,1 million euros.
generations of expertise
For almost two centuries, suitcases have been symbols of travel and adventure. Louis Vuitton revolutionized luggage with flat, stackable, lightweight, and waterproof trunks.
From its founding in 1854 to modern creations, including pieces designed by Virgil Abloh, the suitcases in this collection reflect the outstanding craftsmanship of five generations.
The suitcases are made of different materials such as zinc, copper, wood, leather and canvas. Their variety shows the evolution of design and the adaptation to the changing needs of an elegant clientele.
Particularly noteworthy is a wardrobe trunk from 1900 with a copper exterior, which protects against heat, humidity, and moisture. The famous Ideal Trunk, made of leather and brass, offers specialized compartments for shoes, hats, and scarves.

Iconic models and custom-made items
A standout piece is the Monogram Canvas Malle from 1896, which introduced the legendary monogram pattern.
The Malle Bureau from the 1920s and 1930s also has compartments for writing utensils and a folding table. Another highlight is the Stokowski Trunk, which was designed for the conductor Leopold Stokowski.
Special cases – such as an alligator case with a caviar set and a monogram cake case – underline the luxurious character of the collection. A limited edition Croquet Malle from 2004 contains everything needed for a game of croquet.
The collection also includes special editions such as the 1927 Hemingway Library Trunk, a traveling library for books designed by Gaston-Louis Vuitton for Ernest Hemingway. A yellow Vuittonite Library Trunk version will also be presented at the auction.
exhibition and online sales
The collection will be on public display from June 19 to 24, 2024 at 9 Avenue Matignon in Paris.
This exhibition with special scenography will thus launch the online auction from June 19 to July 3.
