Although the label "natural wines" is becoming more and more popular, this does not mean that they are on everyone's lips. These wines are not industrially produced, pleasant wines. They are wilder and really shake up the usual taste expectations.

This is also the reason why some people don't want to drink anything else, while others can hardly contain their criticism. The founding team of the new online wine shop 8greenbottles has summarised what this controversial wine trend is all about and why you should definitely form your own opinion.

While there are uniform criteria for organic wine that allow classification, this is much more difficult for natural wine, as there are no uniform classifications. It starts with the different names: while some people talk about Vin Naturel and Raw Wine, others refer to this extraordinary drink as Naked Wine or Low-Intervention Wine.

Surprise in the glass: The appearance of natural wines is clearly different from what we know from conventional white, rosé and red wines - they are cloudier. The different visual impression is also reflected in the taste, which is often compared to cider.

Overall, natural wines appear more complex and taste more bitter. The wine should retain its wildness and not be smoothed out in terms of taste during production. Based on their origin, natural wines develop an individual note without any major influence.

Natural wine is not the same as organic wine: An organic wine is one that is produced under certain conditions and bears a corresponding seal. Although the majority of natural wines come from organic wine production, one cannot generally assume that every natural wine is also organic.

If you take a look at the sulphur content of natural wines, you will see that these meet even higher requirements than those usually required of organic wines. Other wines are subjected to a controlled fermentation process. In natural wines, wild yeasts ensure that fermentation begins spontaneously.

In addition, filtration is not used. This is clearly evident in the cloudy appearance, which is due to the fine particles remaining in the wine. And during fining, the wine is tamed and minor "flaws" are corrected. This is not what is wanted with natural wines, because the aim is not to produce a product that is clean in terms of appearance and taste.

Little or no sulphur is added. It helps to preserve the wine. However, with raw wine it is desirable that it is still alive when it is bottled and that it even continues to ferment a little if necessary.

"Natural wines are for wine fans who like to experiment, because not everyone likes them," says Ramona Winter, co-founder of 8greenbottles. Her founding partner Philipp Heinzer is enthusiastic about these wines and is certain: "Once you have discovered natural wines, you won't want to be without them."
